The Curly Girl Method - Should You Be CG Friendly Or Not?

Am I “CG Friendly” good news if you are reading this blog post you’ll get to find out straight away that I am NOT following the curly girl method! Shock, horror? Maybe!

I have nothing against the actual “Curly Girl Method” itself, it just didn’t work for me. My goal is to share with other curlies that it is ok for you to not follow this method if you find it isn’t working for you. No one should blame or shame you for this as long as you are not drastically damaging your hair you will be fine!

So what is “CG Friendly”? Here is the actual definition of this hair care method:

The Curly Girl Method is an approach to hair care designed for naturally curly hair that has not been chemically relaxed. It is similar to the "no poo" method in that it discourages the use of shampoo. Among other things, it calls for the use of a cleansing conditioner in place of shampoo (also called "conditioner washing" or "co-washing"), no silicones (used in many commercial conditioners and styling products), the use of a diffuser when blowdrying, and no combs, brushes, or terrycloth towels. It also includes tips for using hair gel and other styling products. The aim in general is to treat naturally curly hair gently, minimizing damage to the hair cuticle; to keep it moisturized, since curly hair is more prone to dryness than straight hair; and, perhaps most significantly, to accentuate rather than interfere with the hair's natural curl pattern.[1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9]

Here are a list of my top 5 ‘curly girl friendly’ hair products I would recommend trying:

SheaMoisture Jamaican Black Castor Oil Leave-In Conditioner https://amzn.to/2SHmIy5

As I Am Co-Wash https://amzn.to/2Y11e4T

Kinky Curly Knot Today https://amzn.to/2SvCI66

Camille Rose Naturals Butter Gel https://amzn.to/2OduVes

SheaMoisture Superfruit Complex Masque https://amzn.to/30PbCd0

When I first started my natural hair journey I did actually buy the curly hair handbook and follow the ‘no poo’ method but found my scalp needed shampoo as it gets very itchy. I do however use shampoos free from the nasty sulphates and other drying ingredients. Co-washing works for me in between shampoos but cannot replace my once a week shampoo session.

I’m here to tell you that it is not the end of the world if you are not using ‘CG Friendly’ products or following the actual method.
